• Alexandra nodded silently as she understood the meaning. Brenda and Alexandra had been best friends and lovers for most of their lives. Both had married well and intended to start a family. Alexandra had a daughter, but Brenda had yet to have any children. They had always hoped that they would have one daughter a piece, and that their daughters would be best friends as well. Neither of them cared much for their husbands, but their marriages were what was expected of them. They both came from well to do families who were without male heirs, so they both were required to wed in order to inherit their family's wealth. Alexandra's husband had been the victim of a tragic swimming accident in the pool at the mansion, about a year after her daughter was born. She played the part of grieving widow enough to convince everyone but Brenda of her sincerity. She and Brenda had remained lovers even after they were both married, so nothing really changed for them.

So the authorities had been able to convict her on the grounds that she had benefited from the crime even if they couldn't prove she knew about it.
